Healthcare support workers play a crucial role in various settings, including outpatient departments, accident and emergency (A&E), and community healthcare environments. Throughout this apprenticeship, you will gain the expertise to deliver high-quality care to patients across these diverse areas, ensuring their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Whether you are working in a hospital, clinic, or within the community, this course prepares you to provide compassionate and effective care in a wide range of healthcare settings.

What will I do?

As a Senior Healthcare Support Worker, you will be trained to provide compassionate and high-quality care across various healthcare settings. Through this course, you will develop essential skills and knowledge across the following key areas:

  • Communication: Learn how to communicate with patients, colleagues, and healthcare professionals effectively, ensuring clarity, empathy, and professionalism in every interaction
  • Health and Wellbeing: Gain a comprehensive understanding of promoting and maintaining the physical and mental health of patients, supporting them through recovery or chronic conditions
  • Person-Centred Care and Support: Focus on delivering individualised care by respecting patient choices, needs, and preferences, ensuring dignity and promoting independence
  • Personal, People and Quality Improvement: Enhance your ability to work collaboratively in teams, contribute to improving care services, and develop a culture of continuous improvement in the workplace
  • Health, Safety and Security: Acquire knowledge about maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors, including infection control and the safe handling of medical equipment
  • Duty of Care, Safeguarding, Equality & Diversity: Understand your responsibility to uphold a duty of care, protect vulnerable individuals, and foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all, regardless of background

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following areas based on your interest:

This course prepares you to take on greater responsibilities in healthcare, equipping you with the skills to provide holistic care while ensuring patient safety and dignity at all times.

To ensure completion of this qualification, you will need to be working in a relevant role and industry.

Level 2 English and mathematics are required for this apprenticeship. Apprentices without English and mathematics at level 2 must achieve level 2 prior to taking their EPA. We will assess your level of English and mathematics before you start the qualification, and you will need to be working at Level 1 standard to be accepted onto the apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship can be started at any time, and you will meet with your assessor at least once a month either at your workplace or remotely on Teams.

As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer may have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage (please see below).

There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.

Aged 16 to 18.

The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £5.28 per hour.

Aged 19 or over and in your first year.

The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £5.28 per hour.

Aged 19 or over and have completed your first year.

You’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.

You will be assigned an assessor who will observe your practice in your setting throughout the duration of your course, your assessor will offer support and guidance and will use a variety of assessment methods to help you achieve the requirements of the qualification and standard. When you, your employer and your assessor feel you are ready you will be put forward for the End Point Assessment which will be carried out independently.

Successful completion of the course will lead to a better understanding of the subject, and possible career progression and you could also progress onto other qualifications in this field.
