The Level 1 Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma is aimed at those who wish to develop an understanding of health, social care and children and young people’s settings and decide if a career in this sector is right for them.

You will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and career/ progression within the sector, it will also provide you with the opportunity to develop transferable skills.

Upon completion of this course you may wish to progress onto a Level 2 qualification in health, social care or children and young people’s settings.

What will I do?

During the Level 1 Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma you will study a range of mandatory and optional modules including:

  • Health and Safety
  • Dementia Awareness
  • Safeguarding
  • Communication
  • Equality and Inclusion

You will also have the opportunity to engage in work experience in a health and social care setting.

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grades 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above), to include English or maths. Or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

If you are unable to meet these entry requirements enrolment onto our Pathways to Progress provision will prepare you for progression into the curriculum area of your choice, either in-year (depending on progress made in the first six weeks) or the following September. We also offer full time ESOL courses which give you opportunity to develop your language skills further prior to progression into the curriculum area of your choice the following September.

The Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for three days a week, if you require a Maths or English qualification you will be expected to attend for an additional day per week.

Independent study is expect to support with learning.

The Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1200
If full course payment is made on the first day of the course a discount may apply.

The course is assessed using a range of methods, which include written assignments, booklets, posters, presentations and practical tasks. There are no exams for this course.

This course provides the opportunity for you to develop knowledge and understanding about the wider health and social care sector to help you decide if a career in the sector is for you.

It can also lead for progression onto a Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care or Early Years and Schools.

Additional costs include a Health and Social Care tunic for College, which is similar to those which carers and nurses wear in their jobs. These are approximately £20 each. These can be ordered from the College at the beginning of the year.
