The Pearson BTEC Healthcare Professions Support for England HND Level 5 is a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) that has been approved against employer developed standards, also known as occupational standards.

This course is designed for students who want to embark on a fulfilling career as an Assistant Practitioner, which is an indispensable component of the vibrant Health and Social Care Team. You will engage directly with patients, service users, or clients, providing top-notch, compassionate care. Elevated above healthcare support workers, Assistant Practitioners possess a profound understanding of factors influencing health, encompassing anatomy and physiology. This role is meticulously crafted to meet individual service needs, a culmination of localised employer initiatives.

Throughout this course, you will acquire fundamental skills, knowledge and values that are essential to thrive as an Assistant Practitioner. Immerse yourself in diverse work activities, from comprehensive patient assessments to orchestrating care and mastering advanced clinical skills like catheterisation, wound care, and discharge planning. The opportunities are extensive โ€“ whether in cancer services, physiotherapy, mental health, social care, or diverse hybrid roles breaking free from traditional occupational boundaries.

What will I do?

During your first year, you will study a Level 4 HNC. Upon successful completion of the first year, you will then progress on to the second year to study the Level 5 HND.

  • Meeting the Needs of Individuals with Long-term Health Conditions
  • Team and Individual Leadership: Mentoring and Coaching Others
  • End of Life Care Planning and Support
  • Complementary Therapies in Healthcare Practice

You will also be required to complete 450 hours of work placement activities across the 2 years in a health and/or social care role providing direct care and support to service users. During this placement, you will require a supervisor in the setting who will direct and oversee your development, providing evidence for your portfolio. Therefore, it is advised that you are either employed or volunteering in this areas upon application.

In order to study the Healthcare Professions Support HND Level 5, you will need to have successfully completed:

  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care (or a related subject), a T Level in Health, A Levels which demonstrate strong performance and subject related knowledge, or an Access to Higher Education Diploma
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above, or Functional Skills Level 2 and/or minimum IELTS score of 6

Please note that related work experience may be considered.

It is strongly recommended that you are employed or volunteering in a work placement to meet the requirement of 450 hours across the 2 years of the qualification. This must be in a health and/or social care role providing direct care to service users. You will need a supervisor in your setting who can oversee your continued development and provide evidence for your portfolio.

You will attend college for 2 days a week for two years, plus independent study.

The Healthcare Professions Support HND Level 5 will cost ยฃ7100 per year.

Assessment is via course work which includes essays, reports, practical observations and presentations.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

The Pearson HND courses are highly valued by employers and can lead to careers specialisms, including healthcare support workers and assistant or nursing roles (adult and community nursing, clinical support, midwifery support, and rehabilitation services). Progression onto an undergraduate degree or further professional qualifications in a related area are possible.

Additional costs for this course include an enhanced DBS check due to the nature of the work placements and the industry this course is connected to.
