The Level 1 Hairdressing and Beauty Skills Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification and prepares you for employment as a salon junior or assistant in a hairdressing or beauty salon.

The course is based at Boston College and Boston College Spalding College, which both have fully equipped salons open to the public.

What will I do?

The Level 1 Hairdressing and Beauty Skills Diploma is broken down into several units, which cover numerous practical skills such as shampooing and conditioning, blow drying, facials, manicures, pedicures and make-up. The course also includes assisting hairdressers and beauty therapists with clients in real working salons.

Teaching and learning methods include:

  • Individual and group work
  • Appraisals and self-evaluation
  • Online exams
  • Enterprise Sessions

You will have a Personal Tutor who will be responsible for course guidance and general support.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grade 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

If you are unable to meet these entry requirements enrolment onto our Pathways to Progress provision will prepare you for progression into the curriculum area of your choice, either in-year (depending on progress made in the first six weeks) or the following September. We also offer full time ESOL courses which give you opportunity to develop your language skills further prior to progression into the curriculum area of your choice the following September.

The Hairdressing and Beauty Skills Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for four days a week.

The Hairdressing and Beauty Skills Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

The Hairdressing and Beauty Skills Diploma is based on an assessment structure therefore, you will be continually assessed throughout the course. Assessments will cover practical applications, written assignments, oral questioning and portfolio evidence.

Successful completion of the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Certificate should enable you to apply for employment in a salon as junior assistant or receptionist or continue with your training on a Level 2 Hairdressing or Level 2 Beauty Therapy course to become a hair stylist or beauty therapist.

Progression to Level 2 is dependent on the following:

  • Minimum 90% attendance
  • Completion of NVQ Level 1
  • Satisfactory reports from all tutors
  • Acceptable behaviour/attitude
  • Ability to progress
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Successful selection at interview

Additional costs include purchasing an equipment kit (£170 approximately) which will include everything you need for practical lessons.

Tunic overalls are compulsory and you will be provided with an order form during pre-course interview (£45.00 approximately).

Trips to salon exhibitions at London (Edexcel) or Birmingham (NEC) are arranged where you are encouraged to attend as part of their course. (Cost is approximately £25.00).

All kits, uniforms, books etc. must be purchased at the beginning of term.
