Why study GCSE English Language?
GCSE English Language is universally recognised as a qualification that helps you to take your next steps in education, or progress in your career, be that a promotion or career change. It might also be the course for you if you are curious about the way English works.
What is Blended Learning
We realise that adults have busy and complicated lives, so it is sometimes difficult to commit to being in a classroom at a set time each week. To help with this, we have designed a mixed online and classroom-based model for our GCSE English Language course.
Is this the right course for me?
Although GCSE English is recognised by all employers and educational settings in the UK, it might not be the course for you. Functional Skills English at Level 2 can be completed in about half the time of a GCSE, depending on your starting point, and is recognised by most employers, educational settings and is part of most apprenticeship frameworks. Head over to our Fuctional Skills English courses for more information. A Functional Skills English or ESOL qualification might also be better for you if you are looking to develop your spelling, punctuation, grammar and spoken skills. In GCSE English Language, you will study a range of contemporary texts, such as novels and autobiographies, as well as non-fiction texts from the nineteenth century. You will read these texts to analyse the way the writers use language and how they structure their texts to engage their audience. You will also learn how to judge how successful writers are in persuading, informing or advising their audiences.
You will also write texts such as articles, blogs and letters to provide information or influence your reader, as well as producing creative texts.
There are no formal entry requirements, but you will complete an assessment at enrolment to make sure this is the right course for you.
Initially, you will attend three sessions in Boston. This is to get an idea about how the course works and familiarise yourself with the online materials. After this initial period, you will use our online materials to study independently for two weeks online at a time of your choosing and then attend a classroom session in Boston, Spalding or Horncastle every third week. This pattern will continue up to the exams in May and June. The classroom sessions will be used for discussing the materials you have studied and completing assessments to check your progress.
GCSE English Language (Blended Learning) will take you a total of 26 weeks to complete. You will attend our Boston Campus (Rochford) from 6:00pm โ 8:30pm for the initial 3 weeks, and then once every 3 weeks at your choice of our Boston, Spalding or Horncastle Campuses.
For most people the course is free although there could be a charge depending on your funding eligibility, which might depend on visas and residency.
There are two written exams, which are usually held in the middle of May and the first week in June. You must be available to take these exams. The exams are split equally between reading and writing tasks.
You can achieve a grade 1-9, with a grade 4 being the grade that is required by employers or to progress in education.
Each exam lasts for 1 hour and 55 minutes and is worth 50% of the total marks available.
There is also a small Speaking and Listening element to the qualification. To achieve this, you will need to deliver a presentation lasting about five minutes on a topic of your choice.
GCSE English is a basic requirement for most areas of employment. Some professions such as nursing, social work and certain roles in the emergency services require a GCSE English Language grade. However, check the entry requirements for your chosen course of study or profession to make sure a GCSE is the qualification that you need. Functional Skills English is widely accepted.
