If you need a qualification to help you progress your career, take your next steps in education or develop your knowledge for further training and development then a functional skills course could be for you!

The Functional Skills English qualification is taught at three different levels: Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You will undertake an initial assessment to determine which level will be most suitable for you to start at.

The qualification is recognised by employers and most Universities as being an equivalent level to GCSEs.

Functional Skills English gives you the skills to function effectively in your life and work.

What will I do?

You will have the opportunity to improve your:

  • Writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation and types of text
  • Reading skills: skimming, scanning and for detail
  • Speaking and listening/communication: discussions, presentations, following instructions

The course is delivered by experience tutors using a variety of interesting resources. Sessions are friendly and fun and allow you to work at your own pace. You will study in our classrooms and via e-learning.

Functional Skills English is a key qualification and is suitable for those learners who do not currently hold a GCSE in the subject or ESOL learners who have achieved ESOL Level 2 in reading and speaking and listening.

To study this course you will need to be able to cope with the regular commitment of a once a week class and capable of some independent study.

This course will take you 5 days to complete, over 1 week.

Starting Monday 19th June 2023, you will attend college at our Boston Campus (Rochford), between 9:15am and 4:15pm, Monday to Thursday, with your examinations taking place on the Friday.

You will also attend an assessment day prior to the course beginning, to evaluate the level that will best suit you.

The Functional Skills English course is free.

You will be assessed through externally set online examinations, as well as a speaking and listening exams which are internally assessed.

Certificates in English can help you to gain access to further training, in work and in your day-to-day lives as well as career progression and enhanced job opportunities.

Level 1 is equivalent to vocational GCSE grades 2 – 3 (Old GCSE grade E - D).
Level 2 is equivalent to vocational GCSE grades 4 - 5 (Old GCSE grade C).
