The aim of the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Engineering is to develop the skills and knowledge needed to work within this sector and enhance your employment opportunities. This exciting and challenging higher level course is targeted to those that want to excel and further develop their knowledge towards degree level engineering.

The course aims to equip you with the essential qualities of an engineer - for example working effectively as a team, solving problems, having an awareness of cost, and sustainability.

What will I do?

During your Engineering HND the units you will study are:

  • Research Project
  • Professional Engineering Management
  • *Sustainability in Engineering
  • *Further Maths
  • *Lean Manufacturing
  • *Advanced Manufacturing Technology

The course is taught between practical and theory sessions, including e-learning, one-to-one support, individual learning plans, external visits, events and speakers in the purpose-built Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology Centre.

An MMP profile on an Engineering BTEC Level 3 course or a related subject, or an A Level equivalent (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to Higher Education qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.

As the Engineering HND is a Top-Up Qualification, you will also need to have completed the Engineering HNC.

Individual cases will be considered if you fall outside any of these categories.

The Engineering HND will take you one year to complete. You will attend College two days a week. Independent study will also be necessary.

The Engineering HND course fees will be:

All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.

Your assessment consists of both coursework and practical examinations e.g. presentations and group discussions.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

The BTEC HND qualification is highly valued by employers and can lead to careers in Engineering.

A key progression path for Pearson BTEC HND learners is to the third year of a degree or honours degree programme depending on the degree in question.
