The Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning (STLIS) Certificate is suitable for those who have some prior experience to starting the course or who have already gained a Level 2 in STLiS or Childcare.

It is designed to enable you to further develop your skills and knowledge that are required to effectively support pupils with their learning by addressing key issues within education, including safeguarding, assessment for learning and understanding schools as organisations.

You will also need to secure a placement within a school setting, either employed or volunteering for a minimum of 100 hours for the duration of your course.

Upon successful completion of this course, the qualification you will achieve is the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

What will I do?

During the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning (STLIS) Certificate You will study 11 mandatory units, which you are required to study – these will support you in your current role, or help you to develop new skills for career progression.

The mandatory units include:

  • Safeguarding
  • Professional Relationships
  • Child Development
  • Positive Behaviour
  • Support Learning Activities
  • Support English and Maths Skills
  • Support the Use of ICT in the Learning Environment
  • Support Assessment for Learning
  • Engage in Personal and Professional Development

The observations and assignments will demonstrate your skills and knowledge within your role to allow you to achieve your qualification and progress to further training or employment.

As a Boston College student, you will have access to the library on the Rochford campus, where you can access a range of books to support your courses or use the computers or printers. You can also access the coffee shop, food court and canteen on the Rochford Campus.

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

There are no formal entry qualifications for the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning (STLIS) Certificate.

You will need however, to demonstrate some experience working within a school environment, supporting learning in various lessons, promoting positive behaviour, and gaining a wide range of experiences. This could be in an employed or voluntary position for at least 100 hours over the duration of the course.

If you do not hold English and Maths at GCSE grade 4 (Old GCSE grade C) or an equivalent you are encouraged to undertake these qualification.

If you are concerned about the above entry requirements an alternative course available is the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate Level 2 which will enable you to gain the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the role of a TA.

Supporting Teaching and Learning (STLIS) (Teaching Assistant) Certificate Level 2 will take you 1 year to complete.

You will initially attend college for a course induction with you tutor, at our Boston Campus (Rochford).

Learning will take place on Teams where you will need to attend a workshop, once a month, 5:00pm – 8:00pm.

This course is flexible to fit around other commitments. You will need to ensure that you can complete a placement within a setting during this time.

The Supporting Teaching and Learning (STLIS) Certificate is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1417.

Aged 19+?
If you are aged 19 years or over on the 1st day of your course, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment, you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. This course will be 50% practical and 50% theory.

You will be assigned to an assessor and they will come and observe you in the school placement. The observations and assignments will build up a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your skills and knowledge within your role. You will also collect other types of evidence to build up your portfolio including witness testimonies, professional discussions, product evidence and assessor questions.

Students who have successfully complete this course have gone onto the Foundation Degree in Learning Support or employment.

Additional costs include purchasing textbooks, approx. £20; however, you can assess textbooks via the College library.
