The Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC National Diploma will be studied over two years. During your first year you will enrol on and study the Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) Extended Certificate. This is a standalone one-year qualification. Upon successful completion of the first year, you can then progress and enrol to study the Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC National Diploma, which is equivalent to two A levels.

Successful completion of the Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC National Diploma will gain you full Level 3 Early Years Educator status.

What will I do?

This course is for those learners who do not currently hold a grade 4 in English and Maths. During the course you will be given the opportunity to achieve these grades. If you do currently hold a Level 4 in these subjects the course you will need is the Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC National Extended Diploma Level 3.

During the two year course you will cover a range of core subjects and personal development subjects including:

  • Child development
  • Communication, literacy and numeracy
  • Play and learning
  • Keeping children safe
  • Physical development care and health needs
  • Children’s personal, social and emotional development
  • Working with parents and other in early years
  • The early years foundation stage
  • Enquiries into current research
  • Observation assessment and planning
  • Reflective practice assignment
  • Early years foundation stage

The two year course also requires you to undertake 750 hours of work experience. You have to experience a minimum of 3 different placements settings and must spend a minimum of 100 hours in one placement for each other following age bands:

  • Birth up to 1 year 11 months in a nursery or in home-based care
  • 2 years up to 4 years 11 months in a nursery, pre-school or home-based care
  • 5 years up to 7 years 11 months with children who are in a classroom setting

Up to 150 hours can be undertaken with children with additional needs in an older age group.

There will be educational visits throughout the year with an end of year trip of learners' choice this will be as part of enterprise activities. The department will support the trip, however a small contribution may be required.

A number of professional speakers and/or visitors will be incorporated into the course throughout the year.

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC Diploma are five GCSEs at grades 4 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including English, Maths or an equivalent Level 2 qualification.

The course is focussed on a work based learning route and will help you gain the qualifications and experience needed for an Apprenticeship in early years.

If you are concerned about the above entry requirements an alternative course available is the Children's Care Learning and Development Level 2.

The Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC Diploma will take you two years to complete. You will attend College for three days a week, and at placement for two days a week.

You will need to attend the core subjects and the English and Maths GCSE lessons if applicable.

You will be required to complete all course assignments in a timely manner and will be required to access further research to ensure breadth and depth of knowledge, therefore a commitment to study out of college is required. To help with this you will be introduced to study plans during induction.

The Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) BTEC Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

Aged 19+.

For those aged 19+, this course will cost: £4670.
Year 1 (Extended Certificate) - £2225.
Year 2 (Diploma) - £2445.

You may be eligible to study this course for FREE should you be eligible under one of the following criteria:

  • Aged 19 or over, and earning less than £18,525
  • Aged 19 or over, and currently unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Aged 19 or over and do not currently hold a Level 3 qualification

Alternatively, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £27,295 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. Your eligibility depends on your course, nationality, and age.
