The Level 1 Caring for Children Under Five Introductory Diploma has been designed to prepare you for future study by gaining a Level 1 qualification. Alongside gaining a basic understanding of caring for young children, you will also develop a range of transferable skills to enable you to progress onto further study.

This course will be hands on with lots of practical activities to support your learning. You will gain an understanding of how to support children’s play whilst ensuring that they are safe and healthy.

What will I do?

During the Level 1 Caring for Children Under Five Introductory Diploma you will complete four core units where you will gain transferable skills, these are:

  • Being Organised
  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan
  • Working with Others
  • Researching a Topic

Your childcare units will consist of :

  • Providing an Activity to Support Children’s Emotional and Social Needs
  • Planning a Safe Childcare Environment
  • Providing an Activity to Encourage Children to Eat Healthily
  • Providing a Pre-school Children’s Reading Activity
  • Providing a Children’s Creative Activity
  • Providing a Children’s Physical Activity
  • As part of your course you will also undertake 30 hours of work experience to enable you to have real hands on experiences and begin to apply your knowledge.

    If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

    Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

    Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grades E or above (new GCSE grade 2 or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

    If you are unable to meet these entry requirements enrolment onto our Pathways to Progress provision will prepare you for progression into the curriculum area of your choice, either in-year (depending on progress made in the first six weeks) or the following September. We also offer full time ESOL courses which give you opportunity to develop your language skills further prior to progression into the curriculum area of your choice the following September.

    The Caring for Children Under Five Introductory Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for two days a week completing the childcare element and one day to study Maths and English. You will also undertake 30 hours of work experience.

    The Caring for Children Under Five Introductory Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

    If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1200.

    You will complete a range of assignments including some practical observed tasks.

    Upon completion of your Level 1 Diploma you will be able to progress onto a level 2 childcare qualification or further study.
