Our Level 3 (Advanced) Customer Service Apprenticeship is a nationally recognised course involving the use of advanced customer service techniques and training, offering you the opportunity to gain hands on industry experience.

The Customer Service Advanced Apprenticeship responds to the employer need for high levels of customer service skills and where an individual’s technical skills can be complimented in roles such as customer relationship managers, co-ordinators and team leaders, care assistants, dispensing assistants, dental nurses or cinema operatives.

What will I do?

As an Apprentice, you will receive on-the-job training at your workplace and support from your assessor. Additional training and support is given through a day release basis at Boston College.

The Apprenticeship framework consists of several elements, which have been identified by employers to ensure Apprentices have an appropriate set of customer service skills to operate in their specific chosen job role.

These elements are:
Maths - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.

English - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.

ICT - Level 1 or Level 2 is a requirement of some Apprenticeships unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.

ERR - Employee Rights and Responsibilities, which includes health and safety, equality and diversity as well as employment legislation.

PLTS - Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which includes team working, creative thinking and reflective learning.

Vocational Element (Knowledge) - most Apprenticeship frameworks include off-the-job study for a technical certificate, which is usually done at College.

Vocational Element (Competence) - all Apprenticeships include on-the-job training and assessment leading to a competence based vocational qualification.

On some frameworks, the knowledge and competence elements are combined into one qualification.

All of the above will be integrated within the assessment process.

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Customer Service Apprenticeship are five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including English and Maths and/or Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 2 or above (or equivalent).

You will also need to be in a relevant job role.

The Customer Service Apprenticeship will take you 18 months to complete, and is accomplished in the workplace.

You will be expected to attend College at least once a month where you will receive one-to-one support from your assessor and functional skills tutors.

As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer may have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage (please see below).

All Apprentices will receive a minimum wage of £3.90 per hour within their first year of training from their employer, although they can, and often do, pay more.

In the second and subsequent years of an Apprenticeship programme, the following applies:

Under 18s – the required national minimum wage of £4.35 per hour.

18–20 year olds - the required national minimum wage of £6.15 per hour.

21-24 year olds - the required national minimum wage of £7.70 per hour.

25 year olds and over – the required national minimum wage of £8.21 per hour.

Advanced Apprentices, with support and opportunities within the workplace, can progress to:

  • The Higher Apprenticeship in Business and Administration or Leadership and Management
  • Further of higher education to undertake customer service, business related or other qualifications, including Foundation Degrees in areas such as business, business management, retail management or hospitality.

With additional training, Advanced Apprentices may be able to progress in their careers to roles including senior customer service supervisor, customer service manager, and a range of other senior customer service related roles.
