The Full Time Pearson Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business is the equivalent to the 1st year of a University Degree and provides an innovative and creative curriculum, covering core areas such as the business environment, business communication and information, marketing and human resources – all fundamental to the success of business organisations.

What will I do?

The Business HNC is made up of eight units: six mandatory units and two specialist units.

You can apply to study on a one year HNC or a two year Higher National Diploma (HND). If studying for the two year HND the units that have been achieved in the first year (HNC) will carried forward towards the HND. In this case, the overall qualification will be on your HND performance.

The course is taught using a balance between practical and theory. We include e-learning, one-to-one support, Individual Learning Plans, external visits, events and speakers.

The entry qualifications for the Business HNC are an MMP profile on a Business BTEC Level 3 course or a related subject (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to HE qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.

Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The Business HNC will take you one year to complete. You will attend College two days a week, Thursday and Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm for one year, plus independent study.

During your programme of study, 30% will be within lectures and 70% through independent study.

The Business HNC course fees will be £5550

Fees may vary depending on personal circumstances, please enquire for further information.

You can apply for a student loan to cover the costs of course fees. You may also be able to apply for various grants and loans to support your learning. Specific advice regarding student loans and other benefits can be obtained from

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.

Your assessment consists of 79% coursework and 21% practical examination e.g. presentations and group discussions.

Successful completion of the Business HNC can lead to the Business HND.

These qualifications are highly valued by employers and can lead to careers in business specialisms such as finance, human resources, management or marketing, as well as other business related careers. The qualifications also offer a progression route to the professional qualifications offered by organisations like the Chartered Institute of Marketing, management accountants and personnel development.

A key progression path for Pearson HNC and HND learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme depending on the degree in question.
