If you are thinking about a career in the construction industry but are not sure which trade to go for, the Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills will introduce you to Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery and Plumbing. You will learn all the basics of these trades, giving you an idea of what you are good at, what you enjoy and what trade you may like to specialise in.

What will I do?

You will learn all the basics of the three trades, giving you an idea of what you are good at and what you enjoy so you can plan your career path and progression accordingly.

The Level 1 Construction Skills Diploma will provide you with an excellent initiation into the world of construction in order to enable you to decide whether this is a sector within which you feel you wish to work in the future.

Units you will study include:

  • Brickwork returns.
  • Cavity walling
  • Solid brick walling
  • Connecting pipes & fittings
  • Combined frames
  • Steel pipes & fittings
  • Halving joints
  • Bridle joints
  • Hatch linings
  • Health and safety, the essential safety that is demanded by the construction industry.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grades E or above (new GCSE grade 2 or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

If you are unable to meet these entry requirements enrolment onto our Pathways to Progress provision will prepare you for progression into the curriculum area of your choice, either in-year (depending on progress made in the first six weeks) or the following September. We also offer full time ESOL courses which give you opportunity to develop your language skills further prior to progression into the curriculum area of your choice the following September.

The Level 1 Construction Skills Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for up to four days a week.

The Level 1 Construction Skills Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course. If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1200

You will build a portfolio of work which covers each trade and will be assessed throughout the course through practical work and exams.

A level 2 trade specific course in, Bricklaying, Site Carpentry or Plumbing, full time or apprenticeship if you seek appropriate employment

Safety boots are mandatory in all of our workshops and must be purchased before the start of the course.
