The Creativity for Wellbeing Award Level 1 course has been designed to foster creativity as a pathway to enhanced mental health and emotional balance. This Level 1 Award in Craft offers an enriching experience where you can explore various art forms, develop new skills, and connect deeply with your inner self. This course invites you to undertake independent research to enrich your personal progression and experience, although this is not a requirement. Emphasising a mindful approach, you will be encouraged to slow down, appreciate the inspiration around you, and translate your emotional responses into your creative process.

This course is aimed at individuals wanting to explore creative art making for self-expression and/or for relaxation; for those hoping to increase self-awareness and/or self-confidence; or those just wanting to give a couple of hours a week to valuable ‘me’ time in the company of a small and supportive group of like-minded people; for those wanting to experience the therapeutic benefits of creative activities. No previous experience in art-making is required.

You will explore a variety of creative techniques, including:

  • Ceramics and Pottery: Learn hand-building and thrown pottery techniques, and experiment with various glazing and decorating methods
  • Printmaking: Try your hand at lino, monoprinting, collagraph, and dry-point techniques to create cards or other gifts
  • Painting and Drawing: Develop skills in watercolour, charcoal, pastels, and inks
  • 3D Craft Techniques: Experiment with wire, paper, and assemblage to create unique three-dimensional artworks

What will I do?

Class activities will include experimental art-making with different materials, learning different ways of seeing and recording, and learning new craft-related skills. By the end of the course, you will have a better understanding of the value and role of art and creativity for mental well-being and be equipped with skills, confidence, and knowledge of a range of craft material, techniques, and processes.

You will study three units designed to give you a thorough understanding of the subject.:

  • Explore Craft Resources: You will explore the different art
  • Explore Craft Ideas: You will look at the work of other artists, using their work to inspire you to develop your ideas and work
  • Create, Present and Review a Final Art Item: You will plan, produce, reflect on and display a piece of your artwork

To pass this course, you will need to complete all three of these units. You will need to document your processes and findings for submission. This record will be returned to you following moderation and will, in future, be a valuable resource for you to revisit to remind yourself of your creative journey, as well as being able to refresh your memory on how to do the different crafts you will have tried.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

The Creativity for Wellbeing Award Level 1 will take you 12 weeks to complete. You will attend college at our Boston (Rochford) Campus 1 day per week, 6:00pm-9:00pm. You will also be expected to undertake additional work at home in order to back up classroom activity.

The Creativity for Wellbeing Award Level 1 may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than £20,319 (annual gross salary) a year
