The Practical Animal Care Skills course will provide you with basic understanding and skills of animal husbandry and welfare. You will learn how to handle and carry out health checks on a range of animals housed on our Animal Unit. This course is suitable for someone wanting an introduction into how to look after common pets including how to carry out routine health care such as nail clipping, worming etc on dogs.

This course has been designed specifically to develop confidence and skills when looking after a range of common pets or it can be used as CPD for learners interested animals. You will be able to work with the vast range of animals we have on our unit including common domestic animals and exotic animals.

What will I do?

This course is seven weeks, and you will develop your skills and knowledge in the following:

  • Be able to health check and handle correctly and safely different animal species
  • Know how to feed and water animals correctly
  • Be able to house animals correctly to include correct use of substrates
  • Groom an animal correctly
  • Be able to restraint an animal correctly

There are no formal qualifications for the Practical Animal Care Skills course.

Practical Animal Care Skills will take place at our Boston Campus, starting on Wednesday 22nd January 2025, 5:00pm - 8:00pm. The course will take a total of 10 sessions to complete.

The Practical Animal Care Skills course may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19 or older on the 31st August
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than £25,000 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for funding under the AEB budget this course will cost you £129.00.

Succesful completion of this course could lead onto studying one out full time courses available in Animal Studies.

There are no additional costs/equipment requirements. PPE for animal handling sessions will be provided by the College.
