This course will provide individuals with an introduction in understanding of the skills and mindset required to be successful as an entrepreneur.

You will learn how to assess your strengths and weaknesses, identify opportunities, and develop a business plan. Secondly, the course can help you to understand the legal and financial aspects of starting a business, including taxes, accounting, and funding. This can help prevent costly mistakes and provide a solid foundation for future growth.

Additionally, taking this course in self-employment could provide you with access to a network of like-minded individuals, along with the ability to network, which can be invaluable in your entrepreneurial journey.

What will I do?

During this course you will produce your own SWOT analysis and look at how you may develop or improve a business plan. You will look at the different types of ownership, allowing you to make a decision on how to structure your business. You will also complete some work on basic accounting using excel and Xero.

There are no formal entry qualifications for this course.

Introduction to Self-Employment will take you 5 sessions to complete. Starting Tuesday 6th June 2023, you will attend out Boston Campus (Rochford), between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.

Introduction to Self-Employment may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19 or older on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than Β£20,319 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for funding under the AEB budget this course will cost you Β£50.

There are no formal assessments on this course, however you will receive a Boston College certificate of attendance upon completion of the course

This course could lead on to successful development and growth of your own business, alternatively you could progress to our Accounting courses. Boston College offers a range of accounting courses including Accounting AAT Certificate Level 1,2 and 3.
