If you want to become an accountant or work in a finance role the Level 3 Accounting and Business Finance course is for you.

The Accounting and Business Finance course will be studied over two years. During your first year you will enrol on and study the Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), Level 3 Certificate in Financial Studies and Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Business. This is a standalone one-year of study. Upon successful completion of the first year, you can then progress and enrol to study the Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies and Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business in your second year.

This course is an amalgamation of three separate qualifications giving you a broad ranging knowledge of the finance sector. The combination of Accounting and Business studies is your route to an exciting professional career in the business world. The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Accounting course is an industry standard qualification, which when combined with a nationally recognised Business and Finance certificates, leads to your career options being endless.

What will I do?

The Level 3 Accounting and Business Finance is a two year course. The first year is a standalone qualification. Upon successful completion of the first year, you will then have the option to progress on to the second year to develop and build upon the knowledge you have gained in your first year.

The course is made up from 3 qualifications.

Year 1.

  • Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Units of study include Computerised Accounts, Bookkeeping Transactions, Bookkeeping Controls, Elements of Costing, and Working Effectively in Finance
  • Level 3 Certificate in Financial Studies. This Certificate is primarily designed to provide a comprehensive induction into personal finance. It will also develop core skills needed for the finance sector
  • Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Business. Within this course learners will study units such as Exploring a Business and Developing a Marketing Campaign

Year 2.

  • Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Units of study include Advanced Bookkeeping, Final Accounts Preparation, Management Accounting: Costing, Indirect Tax, Ethics for Accountants, and Spreadsheets for Accounting. This course completes with a synoptic exam
  • Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies. This Diploma adds onto the previous year’s course and provides an in-depth exploration of the key concepts of financial capability and how they are applied for longer term financial sustainability
  • Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business. This course builds on the previous year content looking at Personal Business and Finance and the Recruitment and Selection Process

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Accounting and Business Finance are five GCSEs at grades 5 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including English Language and Maths at grades 6 or above.

OR Merit or Distinction at First Diploma Level in a related subject together with Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths (or equivalent) (Learners undertaking the new Generation NQF BTEC Level 2 Diploma may be accepted with an M D profile; each case will be assessed on an individual basis).

It is expected that learners will have completed year one successfully before progressing to year two. Individual cases will be considered.

The Accounting and Business Finance course will take you two years to complete. You will attend College for three-four days a week, plus independent study and work experience.

The Accounting and Business Finance course is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

For those aged 19+, this course will cost: £4562.

Aged 19+?
If you are aged 19 years or over on the 1st day of your course, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. The AAT qualifications are assessed by computer based examinations taken at appropriate points throughout the year according to the delivery schedule.

The Certificate in Financial Studies are assessed with external examinations.

The Business Certificate is assessed through internally assessed assignment work, which may include presentations and group work, and externally assessed exams and pre-set tasks.

The course offers a great opportunity for those wishing to start a career in accounting and/or business.

BTEC qualifications are highly valued by employers and AAT qualifications are nationally recognised accounting qualifications that meet industry standards, as is the Certificate in Financial Studies.

Therefore, students who complete this course have many different progression routes available such as opportunities to progress onto an Advanced or Higher Level Apprenticeship in Accounting or Business or onto university level study as both Level 3 elements attract UCAS points.

Additional costs may include an exam resit fee of between £25-£41.

There may be an opportunity to complete an Industry Placement alongside your main Level 3 course.

Industry placements give you the chance to put into practice what you have learned and you will have the opportunity to spend an average of 50 days working for an employer, in a role directly relevant to your course.

With an Industry Placement you will gain technical skills, be prepared for the world of work, and gain connections in order to secure a job after your course.

  • You will take part in an average of 50 days placement in a role that is directly relevant to your course, in an external organisation.
  • You will develop the practical and technical skills required for your profession/trade.
  • You will develop employability skills such as communication, teamwork and time management.

An existing part time job may qualify as an Industry Placement if it meets the criteria set by the College.
