The Boston College Pre-Access pathway is designed to provide you with the means to achieve a level 2 certificate of study.
The course will help you to prepare yourself for a range of level 3 courses; particularly the Access to HE Diploma in Computing.
You will study in a friendly, supportive atmosphere, and every effort is made for learners to focus on gaining confidence and independent learning strategies.
During the Pre-Access to Computing course you will study Computer Programming, Robotics, Study Skills and Careers Progression.
You will be required to compile a portfolio of assignments. Learning is carried out through a variety of processes including theory and practice, portfolio assignments, individual presentations and group work.
You will have access to computing and library facilities. There are weekly group tutorials with individual tutorials available on a regular basis.
There are no formal qualifications are required, however you must be able to demonstrate maturity and ‘life experience’ and show a real commitment to your studies.
There will be an informal interview with the Pre-Access Co-ordinator to determine the suitability of the course and a short maths and English diagnostic assessment for you to undertake to help us assess suitability for the course and what support may be required.
You will attend College for one day per week, starting in January 2023 and study over two 10-week semesters. Some learners may also wish to undertake a Digital Skills qualification alongside this course.
You will also be expected to carry out some self-directed study and depending on prior qualifications will need to work towards either Functional Skills or maths and /or English GCSE qualifications.
For those aged under 19 this course is free.
Tuition fees will depend on your personal circumstances however, there is a maximum course fee of 2 x £175 (per 10-week block).
