This Access to Medical Science programme is designed for adults interested in undertaking paramedic science, applied science, biomedicine, pathology, and other specific routes such as health science, optometry, radiology, molecular biology, immunology, and cytology.

Successful completion of the course could also lead to progression onto the College's University Level courses. You could study an FdSc / BSc in Sport, Fitness & Wellbeing.

What will I do?

This Access to Medical Science programme is gained by achieving the following credits:

  • 30 Level 3 credits in Human Biology (Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Homeostasis and the Endocrine System, Human Respiratory and Cardiac Systems, Infectious Diseases, Inheritance and Genetic Engineering, Nutrition and Digestion, Reproduction)
  • 15 Level 3 credits in Chemistry (Introduction to Chemistry [ungraded], Fundamentals of Chemistry, Fundamentals of Chemistry: Experiments, Medical Chemistry)
  • 3 Level 3 credits in Health Studies (A Medical Condition)
  • 9 Level 3 credits in Study Skills (Presentation Skills, Progression Skills, Research and Referencing)
  • 3 Level 2 credits in Maths in a Health and Social Care Context

The entry requirement for Access to HE Medical Science, is that you hold at least a minimum of one GCSE grade C (New GCSE grade 4), in either English or Maths (equivalent qualifications may also be accepted e.g., Functional Skills Level 2).

However holding a full Level 2 qualification prior to entry on the Access to HE Medical Science programme, would be beneficial.

The Access to Medical Science programme will take one year (34 weeks) to complete.

You will attend College three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and hours are designed to fit around childcare/school hours, with your day starting at 9:00am-9:15am and finishing 2:45pm - 3:00pm.

The Access to HE Medical Science programme will cost £3384.

If you have already gained a Level 3 qualification you may still be able to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan.

Aged 19+? If you are aged 19 years or over on the 1st day of your course, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. For the full diploma to be awarded you will need to compile a portfolio of assignments, which are externally moderated by Aim.

You will learn by a variety of processes including theory and practice, portfolio assignments, individual and group work.

Successful completion of the Access to Health and Social Care Professions programme may allow you direct entry to university study on courses such as paramedic science, applied science, biomedicine, pathology, and other specific routes such as health science, molecular biology, immunology, and cytology. Or you could study an FdSc / Bsc in Sport, Fitness & Wellbeing at Boston College.
