The A level in Media Studies provides you with the chance to study the industry and its products, as well as providing you with the opportunity to produce your own media products. The Media industry employs a large number of people worldwide, and successful completion of the A-level in Media Studies will provide you with a suitable foundation for a range of degree courses, vocational qualifications and employment.
The Media play a central role in contemporary culture, society and politics. They shape our perceptions of the world through the representations, ideas and points of view they offer. Media industries employ large numbers of people worldwide and generate significant global profit.
In your first year of the A level in Media Studies, you will study AS. This can be a standalone qualification. In your second year, you will study A2 and together with your AS qualification they will gain your full A level.
You will cover three units during this two year course.
Investigating the Media: Language, Representation, Media Industries and Audiences.

You will study in the College's purpose built A level building, Boston College Sixth.
You will also have the opportunity to go on educational trips such as Warner Bros. Studios.
The A level in Media Studies is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.
For those aged 19+, this course will cost £2225.

If you are aged 19 years or over on the 1st day of your course, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. During the A level in Media, you will be assessed through two written examinations and coursework.
The exam is based on an audio/visual resource shown in the exam and set music video studied in class. The exam is 1 hour 45 minutes, and is worth 35%.
This includes studying texts from TV, magazines and online media. The exam is 2 hours, and is worth 35%.
This unit involves applying your learning in creating an online or print work - for example, a DVD cover and poster for a new film in a genre of your choice. This work is internally assessed and worth 30%.
You will have a Personal Tutor to help guide and support their learning. Information on study skills and access to study support groups is available if required.
There are no specific costs but students may be asked to contribute towards educational visits and other activities.
