The A level in Media Studies provides you with the chance to study the industry and its products, as well as providing you with the opportunity to produce your own media products. The Media industry employs a large number of people worldwide, and successful completion of the A level in Media Studies will provide you with a suitable foundation for a range of degree courses, vocational qualifications and employment.

The Media play a central role in contemporary culture, society and politics. They shape our perceptions of the world through the representations, ideas and points of view they offer. Media industries employ large numbers of people worldwide and generate significant global profit.

What will I do?

In your first year of the A level in Media Studies, you will study AS. This can be a standalone qualification. In your second year, you will study A2 and together with your AS qualification they will gain your full A level.

You will cover three units during this two year course.

Unit One.
Investigating the Media: Language, Representation, Media Industries and Audiences.

Unit Two.
Media Forms and Products.

Unit Three.
Media Production.

You will study in the College's purpose built A level building, Boston College Sixth.

You will also have the opportunity to go on educational trips such as Warner Bros. Studios.

The entry qualifications for the A level in Media Studies are five GCSEs at grades 5 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including English Language or Literature at grade 6 or above (Old GCSE grade B or above) or equivalent.

The A level in Media Studies will take you two years to complete. You will attend college for a minimum of four days a week.

The A level in Business is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

Aged 19+

For those aged 19+, this course will cost £1987.
Year 1, AS Level - £724.
Year 2, A Level - £1263.

You may be eligible to study this course for FREE should you be eligible under one of the following criteria:

  • Aged 19 or over, and earning less than £18,525
  • Aged 19 or over, and currently unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Aged 19 or over and do not currently hold a Level 3 qualification

Alternatively, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £27,295 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. Your eligibility depends on your course, nationality, and age. During the A level in Media, you will be assessed through two written examinations and coursework.

Component One.
The exam is based on an audio/visual resource shown in the exam and set music video studied in class. The exam is 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 35%.

Component Two.
This includes studying texts from TV, magazines and online media. The exam is 2 hours and is worth 35%.

Component Three.
This unit involves applying your learning in creating an online or print work - for example, a DVD cover and poster for a new film in a genre of your choice. This work is internally assessed and worth 30%.

You will have a Personal Tutor to help guide and support your learning. Information on study skills and access to study support groups is available if required.

Successful completion of the A level in Media Studies alongside additional A levels, could lead on to studying Media Studies at university.

There are no specific costs but students may be asked to contribute towards educational visits and other activities.
