Whether it's cells or the biological molecules that underpin all life, the genetics that give us our individuality, the ecosystems that cover the world or the homeostatic mechanisms that keep us alive, the A level in Biology is for anyone with an interest in the study of living things, and perhaps a future career involving biology.

What will I do?

The A level in Biology is a blend of academic study, investigative science, and practical work, which will equip you with a command of scientific vocabulary, the mathematical skills required to handle biological data, and the techniques to select and investigate your hypotheses.

Over the course of the two years, you will study a wide range of topics including Biological molecules, Organisms and their environment, Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms, Energy transfers in and between organisms, Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems and The control of gene expression.

You will also conduct 12 exciting practical sessions in our specialised labs.

You will study in three recently refurbished laboratories, including new equipment for the study of polymerase chain reaction, centrifuges, spectrometers and dissection.

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

The entry qualifications for the Biology A level are five GCSEs at grades 5 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including Maths at grades 6 or above and any science GCSE at grade 6 or above (Old GCSE grade B or above) or equivalent.

The A level in Biology will take you two years to complete. You will attend college for a minimum of four days a week.
