Welcome

On behalf of the Learner Services Team, I would like to introduce you to the areas of support that are available at Boston College. Our support team is dedicated to ensuring that each and every learner has the best opportunities and experience while at college, and so we are here to help you with any question or problem you may have before, during and after your time at College. The exceptional level of service by the team is reflected in the training and qualifications held in their respective areas of expertise and so whatever your need, we will endeavor to support you.

Best wishes,

LEARNER SERVICES MANAGER

Learner Support Officer

Our Learner Support Officer is based on the Rochford campus and works with learners across all the College campuses. Whatever difficulties you may have our Learner Support Officer will work with you to help remove any barriers to learning and find a positive way forward.

To provide the right type of support the Learner Support Officer works with other College professionals such as Counsellors, Inclusive Learning Manager and the Health Adviser. In some cases contact can be made with external support services such as Social Services, Targeted Youth Support, Addaction etc.

Each learner is treated as an individual and support can be offered in different forms including:

  • Mediation between the learner and teaching staff and/or parents
  • Advice and guidance on ways to overcome particular barriers to learning
  • For some learners a Behaviour Support Plan/Support Action Plan can be helpful - these are always written with the learner and are used by teaching and support staff
  • Regular support sessions to talk through issues and monitor progress
  • Provision of a Learning Support Assistant (LSA).

Whatever difficulties a learner may have the Learner Support Officer will work with the learner to help remove barriers to their learning and find a positive way forward.

Learner Voice Co-ordinator

If you enjoy taking part in other activities outside of your studies, our Learner Voice Co-ordinator delivers a programme of activities and events across the College, promoting the voice of the learners and working closely with the Student Union. With a friendly and approachable nature, the Learner Voice Co-ordinator will also act as a mentor and is a great point of contact for support. You can also apply for your Student NUS card through the Learner Voice Co-ordinator.

Attendance Monitors

Our Attendance Monitors perform checks that ensure full-time and day-release students are attending regularly. This support service can also uncover areas where students require further help from student support staff.

Information Officer

Our Information Officers, who are based on our Rochford campus, offer a friendly, approachable and highly professional service to all our clients. They provide information on courses and services available throughout the College.

Careers Advisor

There are three qualified Careers Advisers at the College, who can be found at both Rochford and De Montfort campuses. They offer free impartial advice and guidance on learning opportunities, re-training, higher education, employment information, career progression, job searching, preparation for interviews and guidance on choosing the right course for you. There are also workshops available to help with CV writing, letters and forms of application and interview skills. The service is available to both our learners and to the general public.

Counsellors

Our professional Counsellors are here to offer a safe and confidential environment for learners and staff to talk about any personal issues. The service is available at the Rochford and De Montfort campuses. All our Counsellors are members of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work to their ethnic framework.

Inclusive Learning Manager

Boston College is aware that some learners may need extra help and support due to having a disability, a learning difficulty or emotional and behavioural difficulties. Our Inclusive Learning Manager can help with things like dyslexia, autism, medical conditions, moving around the College, personal care, special equipment, behaviour support, trips and visits, work placements and many other aspects of studying in College. We have a skilled team of over 40 Learning Support Assistants that can support learners whilst they are on their courses.

Financial Support

We have a team of staff who are based on both the De Montfort and Rochford campuses. They can help with information on the College Bursary Scheme, Learner Support Fund and Childcare Support, including helping you complete your application. Please see ‘Money Matters’for more financial information.

Health Advisor

As a trained nurse, a midwife and a specialist in contraception services, our Health Adviser is available to give advice and support on any health issues you may have, which will be addressed in a completely confidential environment. Based on both Rochford and De Montfort campuses, this is mainly a ‘drop in’ service although appointments can be made for longer consultations
