
An Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools will enable you to support teachers with their everyday work in the classroom, so that they can concentrate on teaching. You could have another job title such as classroom assistant, non-teaching assistant or learning support assistant.
This course has been changed to recognise the changing workforce within the education sector and breadth of roles that support teaching and learning beyond that of the traditional teaching assistant role.
Your exact duties would vary depending on the educational setting and the age of the children, but would typically include:
You would also support children with particular Individual needs, working one-to-one or in small groups. With experience, you may supervise the class if the teacher is absent for a short period.
In some schools you could have a specialism, such as literacy, numeracy, special educational needs or music. Bilingual teaching assistants are often employed in schools with a lot of children whose first language is not English.
WHAT WILL I DO
The Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools will offer you a years programme of work based learning where you will gain the following qualifications:
You will attend college on a day release basis for one year.
We require you to have two GCSEs at grade C and two GCSEs at grade D or equivalent. We also ask that you have a strong interest working with children in a school environment.
This wage is usually pro-rata as schools only work for part of the year.
Successful learners may progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship or with experience you may be able to progress to senior assistant or be assessed for Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. You could go on to train as a teacher if you meet the entry requirements that apply to all teachers. For all Apprenticeships the Learner is required to be paid at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage (Currently £2.50 per hour).
Before you begin either paid work or volunteering you will need CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) clearance.
