Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing

INTRODUCTION

The Advanced Apprenticeship Hairdressing is a nationally recognised course involving the use of advanced hairdressing techniques whilst improving the apprentice"s creative ability. This framework, along with experience, prepares you for employment as a senior stylist or other creative and managerial roles within the salon setting.

The College Hairdressing & Beauty Department boasts 3 hairdressing salons, 3 fully equipped beauty rooms, a wet room and a large joint reception.

This Advanced Apprenticehip enables you to learn a variety of new hair styling and colouring skills along with emerging cutting, creative and correctional techniques.  It can also help to increase your depth of knowledge of legislation relating to the running of a salon and a managerial role leading to promotional skills.

WHAT WILL I DO

Four Mandatory Units:

Optional Units:

  • Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively dress long hair
  • Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
  • Provide specialist consultation services for hair and scalp conditions
  • Provide specialist hair and scalp treatments

Teaching and Learning Skills covered are:

  • Practical salon skills including a range of new and exciting colouring techniques, new cutting techniques and development of existing skills
  • Preparation for completition work and hair-up work including bridal and evening styles
  • Customer care
  • Background theory
  • Portfolio building
  • Individual and group work
  • Promotional work
  • Increased knowledge of legislation relating to managing a salon
  • Making effective use of resources

Functional Skills include both Maths and English Level 2.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE

The course runs over one year, one day a week on a day release basis.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of an Apprenticeship in Hairdressing plus some salon experience will gain access to this course. Also GCSEs at grade C or above in English and Maths or equivalent qualifications are required.
 
Applicants for the Advanced Apprenticeship must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week including college time.
Full commitment is required to achieve and complete the course as there is quite a large amount of written work/assignments and testing to be completed.

Those applicants not educated to Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent will be expected to complete this as part of their framework.

FEES

Employers may have to pay a contribution for those over  the age of 19.  For more information please enquire within the Apprenticeship Team.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

Most hairdressers ready to study the Advanced Apprenticeship will already possess their own kits which will be required for practical sessions.

For all Apprenticeships the Learner is required to be paid at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage (Currently £2.50 per hour).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Apprenticeship training is now being delivered from new locations, Image International Academy in Spalding and Wolds College in Louth.

We require a high attendance level in order to complete the Advanced Apprenticeship as the course is very intensive.  Learning support can be provided if necessary. Learners will be provided with a Training Adviser for support and guidance throughout the course who will work with the learner, employer and college tutors and monitor progress throughout the year.

Employers will be required to sign a training agreement and their salons will be Health & Safety checked before commencement of the course.  Training Advisers’ are required to visit the salons to complete learning reviews and basic H & S checks every 8-12 weeks.
