Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations

INTRODUCTION

This Apprenticeship confirms occupational competence in Wood Occupations through theoretical and practical learning whilst giving you experience in the workplace. You will study towards this Apprenticeship for one day per week for 2 weeks, while working the remainder of the week with an employer. This Apprenticeship along with your experience can then lead to further training progressing towards supervisory and management roles.

WHAT WILL I DO

This Apprenticeship is made up of 8 units including 3 Mandatory and 5 Optional. To achieve the qualification the candidate must complete the following units:

Mandatory Core Units (all options)

Optional Units – Site Carpentry (any three units from the following)

Optional Units – Bench Joinery (any two units from the following)

Candidates are required to complete a Technical Certificate Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery, Functional Skills in Maths Level 1, English Level 1, Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and a CSCS Health and Safety Certificate.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE

The course runs for two years on a day release basis with work based assessment.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

Entry to the course will be considered in relation to the candidate’s previous knowledge and experience. 1 GCSE at grade C or above in either English, Maths and 2 Grade D in Science or equivalent qualifications are required, as well as a good reference and good communication skills.

Carpentry Apprentices must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week including day release, all workplace’s have to be approved for Health and Safety purposes by the Apprenticeship Team. Employers must be willing to sign up to the training agreement and have to be prepared for the Training Adviser to visit the workplace every 8-12 weeks for training reviews and regular Health and Safety checks.

As well as studying for their Apprenticeship we expect all learners to complete a Functional Skills Portfolio to level 1 in Maths and English.

WHERE COULD IT LEAD

Successful completion of the course could lead to further training or enhance employment opportunities within the construction industry.

FEES

Employers may have to pay a contribution for those over the age of 19.  For more information please enquire within the Apprenticeship Team.

For all Apprenticeships the Learner is required to be paid at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage (Currently £2.50 per hour).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A very high level of attendance is expected at college for the Work Based Learners as they are only attending two days per week where very intensive training takes place.

Apprentices are provided with a Training Advisor to help and support throughout the course and the work place and to ensure the student’s progression.
