Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care

INTRODUCTION

There is a wide range of opportunities open to an Advanced Apprentice looking for a career in Health and Social Care.

The Advanced Apprentice could be involved in supporting older people in health, mental health or learning disabilities settings. They could be employed by a local authority, independent care provider or a voluntary organisation.

The Advanced Apprenticeship is aimed at individuals delivering care and support, often without direct supervision or on their own. Advanced Apprentices may have some supervisory or developmental responsibility for other care workers, or they might be involved in specialist tasks with a degree of responsibility or independence.

The framework of qualifications are particularly relevant to senior care workers, health care workers, home care organisers and community support workers.

The fact that Health and Social Care services for adults are highly regulated means that you will need a qualification if you are to work in this sector.

WHAT WILL I DO?

The framework consists of both practical and theory elements, including an Advanced Apprenticeship, Technical Certificate and Functional Skills in both English and Maths.

The Advanced Apprenticeship consists of 4 core / mandatory units:

You will also need to complete 4 optional units from a choice of 105 which will be discussed and agreed with yourself, your assessor and your employer.

The Technical Certificate supports the delivery of the  Advanced Apprenticeship by giving you the underpinning knowledge to accompany your practice.

It consists of the following three units:

You will also need to complete an additional optional unit which will be discussed and agreed by yourself, your assessor and your employer. To gain the full certificate you must successfully complete all four units by written assignments.

Functional Skills are practical skills in English, Mathematics and ICT that enables everyone to work confidently, effectively and independently in life and at work.

A Functional Skill qualification in English @ Level 2 will show that you are competent in writing documents on complex subjects, making presentations, reading and summarising information as well as spelling, punctuation and grammar, in Mathematics  @ Level 1 will show you can understand practical problems, select & apply maths in an organised way and use checking procedures, in ICT @ Level 1 or 2 will prove you can use ICT systems, find & select information, develop, present & communicate information.

Functional Skills have been produced as a response to calls from employers for more people to have these skills and they therefore form an integral part of an apprenticeship framework. They are the key to success that will open doors to learning and work.

Delivery of Functional Skills within the framework can happen in two ways:

a)      an apprentice attends day release, their functional skills will be delivered at college on that day.

b)      an apprentice does not attend college for their main qualification, they will need to attend college for a block week for each Functional Skill required for their framework. Dates of these block weeks will be discussed with the apprentice and their employer at sign up and they will be booked in advance.
