The aims of the course are to give learners the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification to enter employment in the children’s care learning and development sector. The course also prepares students for access to higher education through the accrual of UCAS points. All candidates will complete a Professional Development Portfolio.
WHAT WILL I DO
The course contains the following modules:
Introduction to working with children
· Development from conception to 16 years
· Supporting children
· Keeping children safe
· Principles underpinning the role of the practitioner
· Promoting a healthy environment
· Play and learning
· Caring for children
· Development of professional skills
Plus a number of optional modules.
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
In addition skills are developed. This will give an additional qualification valued by employers and Universities.
Delivery of the qualification will be through a variety of strategies including formal lessons, lectures, group discussion, research and practical sessions. In addition, students will undertake professional work placements in a variety of Early Years settings.
Assessment is mainly through coursework assignments, presentations and placement reports.
The course is full-time for two years and includes work placement. This will be either at a school, nursery or in the home working with children aged 0-8 years.
The entry qualification for this course are: · 5 x A-C Grade GCSE’s, to include English. · DCCE Level 2 at Distinction with suitable tutor reference and evidence of personal development. · Good reference · Good communication skills · A genuine caring attitude is essential. All students will need to demonstrate at interview the personal skills and qualities required to support their professional development including good communication skills. Mature students will need to provide evidence of their ability to study at this level. Evidence of relevant work experience with good references will be taken into account. N.B. All applicants to care studies courses need to undergo a CRB check. Convictions, warnings or pending convictions should be disclosed at point of interview. Any of the above may jeopardise a place on a course which contains placement. Each case will be dealt with on an individual basis. However failure to disclose will result in course termination.
The course could lead directly to employment with children; in day nurseries, schools, social services or as a private nanny. Successful students may also progress to higher education.
Full time Courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. For others, fees may vary depending on personal circumstances. Please enquire for details.
A small charge may be made for educational visits. You will be expected to purchase your own text book and stationary. A CRB check is required for all students to be paid for by the applicant at the cost of £44. This is non-refundable. N.B. All applicants to care studies courses need to undergo a CRB check. You will be invited to Boston College for a standard interview to: · Check qualifications · Take up references · Complete paperwork · Gather information for CRB checks An Assessment Day to include a further in-depth interview with Care Studies staff with be carried out on Wednesday 15th June or Monday 20th June. A 5 day Practical Placement with relevant reference will be required (if that cannot be obtained through school work experience, the students must access it themselves). You will require a clear CRB or · Minimum 2 years clear of any cautions, reprimands, warnings or convictions. · Blanket ban on violence, racism and drug/alcohol misuse, burglary. · Further investigations on any cautions, reprimands, warnings or convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
