The aims of the course are to prepare candidates to work in a supervised capacity competently, safely and effectively with children 0-16. Successful completion of all the requirements will provide learners with ‘Assistant Practitioner Status’.
WHAT WILL I DO
The course contains the following modules:
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
In addition English functional skills are developed. This will give an addition qualification valued by employers and Universities.
Delivery of the qualification will be through a variety of strategies including formal lessons, lectures, group discussion, research and practical sessions. In addition, students will undertake three professional work placements in a variety of Early Years settings.
Assessment is mainly through coursework assignments, presentations, placement reports and one external exam.
The course is full-time for one year and includes work placement. This will be either at a school or nursery across the age range 0 - 8 years.
Mature students will need to provide evidence of their ability to study at this level. Evidence of relevant work experience with good references will be taken into account.
N.B. All applicants to care studies courses need to undergo a CRB check. Convictions, warnings or pending convictions should be disclosed at point of interview. Any of the above may jeopardise a place on a course which contains placement. Each case will be dealt with on an individual basis. However failure to disclose will result in course termination.
The course could lead directly to employment with children; in day nurseries, schools, social services or as a private nanny.
Successful students may progress to more advanced training at Level 3.
Full time Courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. For others, fees may vary depending on personal circumstances. Please enquire for details.
A small charge may be made for educational visits. You will be expected to purchase your own text book and stationary.
A CRB check is required for all students to be paid for by the applicant at the cost of £44. This is non-refundable.

An Assessment Day to include a further in-depth interview with Care Studies staff with be carried out for all applicants..
A 5 day Practical Placement with relevant reference will be required (if that cannot be obtained through school work experience, the students must access it themselves).
