INTRODUCTION

Applied Science can be studied for 1 year to gain AS Level.  You may then choose to continue your studies into the 2nd year to gain the full A-Level.

In Applied Science you will investigate the chemical, physical and biological science really used in the laboratory and workplace.  There is a strong vocational emphasis and only 1/3 of the modules are exam based.

In order to gain AQA AS Applied Science you will study the following areas:

• Investigating Science at Work (portfolio based).  You will look in depth and research a local organisation that uses science in the workplace.
• Energy Transfer Systems (exam based) - The structure and function of the circulatory and respiratory systems.  Methods of taking physiological measurements.  Imaging methods used in monitoring health and in diagnosis.  Ethical issues raised.  Applications of energy transfer both in the body and in wider contexts; calculating the efficiency of a system.
• Finding out about Substances (portfolio based).  You will research, carry out and write about 5 different practical investigations - reactions of inorganic ions, titration, chromatography, colorimetry and combustion of fuels.

For A2 Applied Science a further 3 modules are also required:

• Planning and Carrying out a Scientific Investigation - during which students will plan and carry out their own researched investigation and produce a portfolio of their work.
• Colour Chemistry (portfolio based) - looks at the chemistry of dyes and pigments.
• The Health Body - exam based topic on Human Biology

Students will be required to undertake some work at home in their own time.

Students have a personal tutor whose role is to facilitate the student learning process and direct personal study time.

You will need enthusiasm and dedication and a willingness to work hard throughout the year as well as the ability to study independantly.

During this course you will have an opportunity to develop your practical skills both individually and in group work.  You will have access to well-equipped laboratories and computer facilities during your course.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE

AS and A2 (Full A-Level) courses may be studied on a part-time basis but students must be able to fit into the full-time timetable.

The course can be studied full-time for one year alongside other AS/A2 Levels or BTEC Applied Science.  Students wishing to study on a part-time basis should consult the course leader.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

The academic qualifications for entry to an A-Level course are 5 GCSE"s at grade A-C.  Grade C in Science is also required to study this course and Math at grade C or above would be helpful.  Any alternative equivalent qualifications may be discussed at interview when studied with BTEC Applied Science.

WHERE COULD IT LEAD

Successful completion will enable you to gain access to many vocational or Higher Education courses that include work on human biology, health or chemistry.  Also to prepare for work in science, laboratory or health related areas.
