BSc (Hons) in Computer Systems Engineering Course Sheet

The Bachelor of Science (with honours) is an industry standard recognised qualification that is awarded from The University of Sunderland. The course is recommended to individuals who would like to gain a full degree qualification specialising in software development.

The course is designed to provide students with theory sessions which are then reinforced by practical tasks to complete. Teaching is delivered by Boston College staff, but your qualification is awarded by the University of Sunderland. Assessment is on a continual basis and through both written assignments and formal examinations. Assessment is delivered in accordance with the University of Sunderland regulations, and is exactly the same as if you studied in Sunderland. Higher Education students spend the majority of their study time in the new Goodliffe Centre building. All equipment needed for the course is available whilst in lessons at Boston College. The Learning Resource Centres are open throughout the week, and have access to all necessary course texts and basic computer facilities. Free internet access, email and printing are provided to you whilst studying at Boston College.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE

The course is studied full-time for 3 years for the award of BSc(Hons) in Computer Systems Engineering. The BSc is usually timetabled for 3 days per week, with additional study required at home.

Students that experience difficulties on the course do have options to leave with a University qualification at the end of years 1 and 2.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

Students traditionally require 200 UCAS points, along with a grade ‘C’ at GCSE in Maths and English, or Level 2 Key Skills in Communications and Application of Number.

Mature students without any formal qualifications are advised to study the Access to Higher Education course first for 1 year. Factors such as work experience or vocational training will be taken into account when considering an entry application. International Students would require an IELTS score of 6.0, along with appropriate qualifications equivalent to level 3 English qualifications.

This course does specialise in the analysis, design and development of computer software which is one of the hardest, but most rewarding areas of the Computing industry. Therefore, all students should be able to demonstrate a good level of problem solving, as well as a commitment to continual development of all aspects of study including formal report writing, presentation skills, and research skills. Students on degree courses are expected to spend some of their own time undertaking directed research.

WHERE COULD IT LEAD

BSc students are highly sought after in the computing field as academically trained students. Typically, students in this area gain employment as computer technicians, database designers, programmers, teachers, network engineers or web site designers, with the kudos of having attained a degree. The BSc in Computer Systems Engineering uses industry standard technologies, methodologies and software to ensure that students are equipped for careers in this rewarding industry.

FEES

Tuition fees for Higher Education courses are “means-tested” by your local education authority (LEA). Your LEA will notify you on application how much you will have to pay towards your fees. You may apply to the LEA or Student Loans company for assistance if you cannot afford the tuition fees, the website is www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. The Fees are £3290 for the 2010/11 academic year:

In Year 1

Students with a household income below £39,305 are entitled to a means tested bursary of £525

(All off-campus students are also entitled to a bursary of £525)

In Year 2

Students will be entitled to a progression bursary of £525

Plus

Students with a household income below £39,305 are entitled to a means tested bursary of £525

In Year 3

For students with a household income below £39,305 there will be the following:

£315 progression scholarship

£525 means tested bursary

£125 success scholarship upon graduation
