The course is designed for those who intend, eventually, to enter Higher Education or to improve their qualifications as an aid to career development. It will also be of interest to those who wish to develop their appreciation of literature purely for their own enjoyment.
WHAT WILL I DO
For the AS level, you will study six literary texts over one year. These are:
Module 1 - coursework
You will begin studying these texts in September. You will hand in both essays (1200 words each) by the end of November. The focus of the module is TRAGEDY.
Module 2 – 2 hour June exam
You will begin studying the texts when the coursework is finished. Section A of the exam will focus in detail on one text whilst in section B you will write more generally about the other three texts. The focus of this module is NARRATIVE.
On achieving the AS level, students can (providing they meet certain conditions) convert this qualification into a full A level by successfully completing a second year. Students who are accepted for study at A2 must be prepared to read the two coursework texts over the summer.
The second year (A2) consists of a total of six texts and pre-released critical material for study.
Module 3 - 2 hour June exam
Module 4 - coursework
AS and A2 (full A-level) courses may be studied on a part-time basis but students must be able to fit into the full-time timetable.
One year of study is required for AS and two years are required for the full A level.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Literature. For mature students entry without formal qualifications is often possible. Students must be prepared to undertake a substantial amount of independent reading, and be aware that the coursework element requires independent study/production.
This subject develops valuable critical analysis and writing skills and is welcomed as an entry qualification for Higher Education in a wide range of subject areas, such as English, journalism, media and communication studies or law. By studying Literature you will become skilled at reading and responding to a wide variety of texts; at working independently and creatively – skills highly valued by employers. We hope that the subject will also develop your enjoyment of reading for pleasure.
