This subject is offered as part of the full-time A-level programme. The course offers an introduction to the religion BUDDHISM.
WHAT WILL I DO
You will study two AS modules and two A2 modules which explore key features of Buddhism and of Ethical Approaches.
AS:
Module 1: AS Buddhism
Study of this module begins in September for a one and a half hour January exam. You will learn about the origins of Buddhism and key beliefs and practices of this religion. You will consider the principles of Buddhism and ways of interpretating this religion.
Module 2: AS Religious Ethics
You begin studying in January for this one and a half hour June exam. You will learn about ethical theories (Kant, Natural Law, and Utilitarianism) and applied ethics (issues such as the abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering, war / peace)
A2:
Module 3: A2 Religious Ethics
In this module (1 1/2 hour June exam) you will use the ethical theories learned about at AS. You will also learn about other ethical approaches and their relevance to applied ethics.
Meta-ethics; free will and determinism; conscience; virtue ethics
Environmental and Business Ethics; Sexual Ethics
Module 4: A2 Buddhism
You will build upon your understanding of key concepts such as the importance of scriptures; religious practice; later Buddhist developments; Buddhist ethics. The one and a half hour exam will be in January.
One year for AS and a further year for A2 (full A-level).
You will have achieved at least five GCSEs at Grade C or above with one of these preferably in English or RS. Mature students without formal qualifications are encouraged to discuss their suitability with the course tutor.
This subject is essential for students wishing to pursue a career teaching Religious Studies, and is useful for those pursuing further studies (or a career) in theology. The subject may be helpful for those wishing to apply for any other university course. It is a relevant qualification for those wishing to enter media-related careers and other careers such as teaching, social worker or public relations.
Full time Courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. For others, fees may vary depending on personal circumstances. Please enquire for details.
