The AQA A Level Law course aims to provide a grounding in the principles of English law, to develop your critical awareness of the changing nature of law, and to instil techniques of ordered thinking.
WHAT WILL I DO?
A full A Level requires the study of four modules. An AS qualification requires the achievement of two modules. Two modules are studied each year. The programme covers the following topics:
1. The English Legal System and Concepts of Liability (ELS): in which you will study the main principles, personnel and institutions of our legal system, and will be introduced to basic concepts of civil and criminal liability. This makes up the AS year.
2. Criminal Law: which covers the concepts and defences in criminal law alongside a number of specific offences such as assault, homicide and property offences as well as defences such as self-defence and intoxication. You will also study broader concepts of law such as fault, morality and justice. This makes up the A2 year.
Assessment is through examinations.
All full-time students have a Personal Tutor to help guide and support their learning. Information on study skills and access to study support groups is available if required.
AS and A2 (full A-level) courses may be studied on a part-time basis but students must be able to fit into the full-time time table. An AS level qualification requires one year of study. The full A Level requires two years.
Full time A Level students will require 5 GCSEs at C or above. It is not necessary to have studied Law at GCSE level. Grade C at GCSE in English would be beneficial
A/AS Level Law is a useful subject for those hoping to progress to a wide range of careers including Police, or Higher Education courses - including to training as lawyers and other legal professionals.
