This course will provide you with a broad, basic introduction to visual and technical Art & Design Skills. It will give you the opportunity to sample a wide variety of materials, practical techniques and processes in order to help you formulate ideas and decide which area of Art & Design you might wish to pursue. It is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s grade A*-C.
WHAT WILL I DO
You will complete a series of practical projects in both two dimensions (flat) and three dimensions (objects) using a variety of materials, techniques and processes. You will also develop your visual awareness and drawing ability. During the course you will learn about how other artists made their work, how to research in order to generate ideas and how to analyse artwork. There are no examinations on this course, instead you will be graded on each project and these marks will add together to give you your final grade. You will also be expected to study English and Mathematics Functional Skills.
As an Art & Design student you will have access to all of our Art, Design & Media facilities, which include dedicated studios for Art & Design, Ceramics and Print, Film & Television Studio and Video Editing Suites, Photography Studio, Black & White Dark Room, Developing Suite and Apple Mac Suites.
The course is studied full-time for one year, normally from September to the following June.
4 GCSE’s at grade D-G, and a portfolio of work which demonstrates your enthusiasm for the subject. You should also have a good school reference, including a good attendance record, which you should bring with you to your interview.
You must also pass a diagnostic screener in English at Level 1.
Successful completion of the course to a Merit or Distinction level would allow you to progress to the BTEC Level 3 Qualifications in Art & Design.
Should you decide to enter the world of employment this course is the equivalent of 4 GCSE’s at grade A*-C.

There is a studio fee of £30.00, payable by November, and you may be asked to pay for educational visits. You will also be expected to provide your own personal media materials e.g. mini DV tapes, SD cards, external hard drives, camera film, printing costs.
