This QAA approved Access to Health and Social Care programme is designed to provide adults with the means to prepare themselves for Nurse or Midwifery training or gain improved employment opportunities within the Health and Social Care sector. Learners study in a friendly, supportive atmosphere, and you can gain a nationally recognised qualification.
The course is validated by the Open College Network East Midlands Region and the certificate awarded is nationally recognised. Successful learners may apply to any University or College in the country or progress to other related Health and Social Care courses.
WHAT WILL I DO?
The Certificate is gained by the student achieving credits in 2 option/subject areas they have selected. Options/ subject areas include:
The course includes some compulsory elements eg. Study Skills, Maths in a nursing context, English and Information Technology. For the full certificate to be awarded students will need to compile a portfolio of assignments, which are externally moderated by OCNEMR.
Group size will vary according to options chosen, but will probably range between 12 and 20. Students learn by a variety of processes including theory and practice, portfolio assignments, individual and group work. Students have access to computing and library facilities. There are weekly group tutorials with individual tutorials available on a regular basis.
Full time students hours of attendance are usually about 15 hours per week from September to June for 33 weeks (this is one academic year) over 4 to 5 days. All lessons are between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm.
Students will also be expected to carry out a significant amount of self directed study.
No formal qualifications are required, however applicants must be able to demonstrate ‘life experience’ and show a real commitment to their studies and the Health and Social Care sector. There will be an informal interview with the Access Co-ordinator to determine the suitability of the course and to help us assess what support may be required.
Successful completion of the course should enable you to progress to Higher Education, Nursing or Midwifery training or enhance your employment prospects in a range of organisations.
