COURSE CONTENT

• Approved advisory literature relating to the mounting of abrasive wheels
• Hazards arising from the use of abrasive wheels and precautions which should be observed
• Methods of marking abrasive wheels as to type and speed
• Methods of inspecting and testing abrasive wheels to check for damage
• The functions of all components used with abrasive wheels, including flanges, blotters, brushes and nuts used in mounting and including knowledge of the correct and incorrect methods of assembling all components and correct balancing of abrasive wheels.
• The proper method of dressing an abrasive wheel
• The adjustment of the rest of an abrasive wheel
• The requirements of The Abrasive Wheels Regulations 1970, which has now been superseded by the PUWER Act 1998

This course contains both theory and practical elements and you will be required to bring protective clothing along with you. Please see additional information.

NOTES

• Unless the abrasive wheels regulations change there is no need to resit the course unless the employer or candidate wishes to. The certificate does not expire.
• The format the course follows is the one that is suggested in the HSE Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels document.
• The course is intended to make those who use and change abrasive wheels aware of the hazards involved and how to reduce the risk of an accident
• Although every training provider produces their own learning materials, they should all follow the standard format as laid down in the above HSE document.
• The HSE document is mainly focused on bench/pedestal/hand held grinders as these are the ones that are involved in the majority of accidents.
• The course allows the candidate to change, true and dress an abrasive wheel of the type they have been trained on.
• By attending this course and completing the practical elements,  the learner is  demonstrating that they are complying with the Health & Safety at Work Act in so much as they are now equipped to identify a particular hazard in the workplace. 

On successful completion of the course you will be presented with a Certificate of Attendance.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE

The course will be complated in one day. A certificate of attendance will be provided after the course.

Protective Clothing Requirements: PPE requirements for the workshop practical session are: safety boots (no trainers), overalls or storemans type coat and safety spectacles.
