NVQ Level 2

INTRODUCTION

This qualification is nationally recognised and prepares you for employment in the hairdressing industry as a junior stylist. The course is based in the College Hairdressing Department which has three fully equipped salons open to the public, and a dispensary area containing all the consumable products required for your practical work and a large reception area for hair and beauty. This is a full time course over 1 year available to learners continuing from NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing or Hair and Beauty.

WHAT WILL I DO

The course is broken down into a number of units which cover a full range of practical hairdressing skills and essential knowledge.

All students will have a Personal Tutor who will be responsible for course guidance and general support.

The course is based on an assessment structure. You will be continually assessed throughout the course as and when you are ready. Students are encouraged to work towards assessments within their salon. Assessment will cover practical applications, written assignment, oral questioning and online tests which will generate a portfolio of evidence.

Each student will have information on study skills and help is available if needed.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

A student should hold a good school report with a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade D or above, have completed NVQ Level 1 and have  a smart appearance, enthusiasm for a career in Hairdressing, the will to succeed, and commitment.

Students with proven prior qualifications and/or experience will be assessed against set criteria and may be able to gain credits towards the qualification.

WHERE COULD IT LEAD

Successful completion of the course should enable you to apply for the following areas:- Hairdressing salons, cruise liners, health farms, lecturing hairdressing, behind stage/hairdressing, salon owner. Successful students will also be qualified to apply for a place on the NVQ 3 hairdressing course.

FEES

Full time Courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. For others, fees may vary depending on personal circumstances. Please enquire for details.

A materials fee of £40 needs to be paid at induction (all prices are approximate).

Tunic overalls are compulsory and students will be provided with an order form during induction in order to purchase this also (£25 approx).

ADDITIONAL COSTS

Students will be expected to purchase a basic hairdressing equipment kit (£180.00 approx) which will include everything you need for practical lessons.

A suitable text book must be purchased to assist with the theoretical aspects of the course. This will be discussed during interview/induction. You will need lever arch A4 folders, dividers, plastic wallets and general stationary and A4 files for theory work and portfolio building.

There are a number of educational visits arranged which students are encouraged to attend at a minimal cost. A number of short courses are also arranged for students on this course and often a small fee is charged - these are optional extras.
