STARTING YOUR COURSE AND STUDENT LIFE
Whatever your age or background, coming to College is a great opportunity for you. But, travelling to a new country away from family and friends, where everything is different, can make you fees a little homesick for a time. As you settle into college life you will make new friends and begin to enjoy the experience.
To help you arrive at college safely we arrange for our driver to meet you are the airport and bring you to Boston College where you will be taken to your chosen accommodation and helped to settle in to your new surroundings. In the first few days you will be shown around the college, introduced to lots of new people, helped to open you bank account, register with the doctor and all the other things which you need to do as part of your new life. To help you make friends quickly we arrange a big welcome meeting including a free lunch. Here you will meet lots of other new students, all feeling as excited and uncertain as you do. There will be an induction programme including visits to other cities in the UK.
A social programme is organised throughout the year. Recently, this has included trips to Manchester, Birmingham, London and Europe. Christmas, end-of-term and Chinese New Year parties are annual College events. Joining in to these activities will ensure that you continue to make new friends, mixing with students from other countries and cultures and will help you to enjoy your stay in England.
At the start of your course you will have an English assessment to make sure you have the right level of English to understand your teachers. You will then enrol on your course and discuss this with your Personal Tutor. He will help you with any difficulties you may have while you are studying. If you need help or advice there are always people to help you.
Success on your course means working hard, not just in class but also completing course assignments, in a team or on your own, or studying in your own time. You will be given the course timetable so you know where to go on which days. It will be different each day so you need to keep your timetable with you. You will have breaks throughout the day when you can meet other students in the Diner to eat, play Pool or just to chat with friends. At the end of your busy day you will return to your homestay family or the Hall of Residence to eat do homework or socialise with your friends.
