International Qualifications Explained

Whether you want to study A levels or want to take a more vocational route, Boston College offers a wide range of courses that lead to different kinds of national qualifications.

With the wide choice available, it is possible to try out more subjects, particularly in the first year of a two-year course, and also to mix AS Levels with units of vocational courses. You will also have the chance to develop new interests and pick up extra qualifications that could give you the edge when it comes to moving on to higher education or work. All of our programmes offer the chance to improve your key skills in Information Technology, Communication and Numeracy.

A Level (AS Level - Year 1, and A2 Level - Year 2)

AS levels are studied for one academic year. You could take up to 5 or mix and match with vocational courses and GCSEs. Up to 3 A2 Levels are studied in the second year. Assessment is mainly by examination and most subjects include some coursework.

Students are encouraged to think critically, research independently and to show independence of judgement.
Teaching styles include direct tuition, discussion groups and independent study using learning resources.
Final grades range from A-E, and each grade earns ‘points’ towards University entrance.

International Access to University

This is a one year course for international students leading to university.  For this course, you need to be 17 years old prior to commencement. You can study two option subjects,  such as Business and Computing, and four compulsory subjects, English, Mathematics, Information Technology and Study Skills.

NVQ

Students undertaking NVQ courses receive specific skills-based training to prepare them for a particular job such as motor mechanic or hairdresser. Assessment in a realistic work environment is key to the NVQ programme.
There is a range of levels, from 1 (the simplest) to 5 (the most complex). The length of time taken to complete any NVQ will depend on the student’s ability, commitment and previous experience.

An NVQ is made up of units, and mature students may be able to gain some units through assessment of previous work experience.

BTEC

Students on these courses undertake vocational training to prepare for entry into a specific career, and take part in work experience. These qualifications are now well established as suitable for entry into Higher Education/University as well as for employment.

Courses are made up of units which are continuously assessed by coursework and examination. Grades are Pass, Merit or Distinction and each grade earns ‘points’ towards University entrance.
