Everyone who meets the required level of entry has the opportunity to train whilst in employment and gain a full Apprenticeship qualification. The main benefits are that you gain work experience at the same time as studying for your qualifications, so by the time your Apprenticeship is completed, you have a head start into the world of work.

A recent report from the Department for Education and Skills proves that it pays to be an Apprentice! The study shows that people who have achieved an Apprenticeship are likely to earn significantly more than their peers who do other vocational qualification.

Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an Apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds. If you are keen to enter the world of work but don’t want to stop studying then an Apprenticeship could be the answer.

What is an Apprentice?

An Apprentice is a learner who is employed and receiving training either entirely in the workplace or attending College on a day release basis, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time.

What do you get out of it?

For all Apprenticeships the Learner is required to be paid at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage (Currently £2.60 per hour) for the work you’re doing, gain genuine work experience in the industry of your choice, and receive excellent training and support from College. Apprenticeships are highly regarded by employers because they prove that you’ve got the skills and practical experience they require, as well as incorporating a degree of flexibility to support an employer’s individual need.

What areas can I study/work in?

At Boston College we offer Apprenticeship / Advanced Apprenticeships programmes in the following occupational areas: Business Administration; Bricklaying; Carpentry and Joinery; Catering and Hospitality; Childcare; Customer Service; Engineering; Electrical Installation; Fitness Instructiong; Hairdressing; Motor Vehicle Repair; Plumbing; Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, Accountancy and many more – please see our course sheets to the right.
 

Apprenticeships (Level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3)

These government funded programmes consist of three parts:

• A nationally recognised vocational qualification at level 2 or 3

• A Technical Certificate/ Diploma

• Key skills/Functional skills. These are transferable skills valued by employers. As part of your programme you will improve your skills in English, Maths and IT. A week in the life of an Apprentice usually involves working with your employer for 4 days a week and attending college for 1 day a week or fully employer focused.

The Computing department enjoys high success rates across the curriculum, with all results above National averages, including 100% achievement rate for Level 1 courses and for all Higher Education courses.  Outstanding achievement rates in Computing at Boston College include the results at Level 3 of 96%.  In addition, a large proportion of Level 3 students progress to Higher Education, with most of these staying at Boston College.
