This program is specifically designed to provide you with the essential skills and knowledge required for starting your career in Carpentry & Joinery industry. With the guidance of expert instructors, you will gain knowledge and learn a wide range of practical skills.

What will I do?

You will have a personal tutor to help support your learning as well as access to information on study skills and study support groups should you need them. Your training will include the following practical skills:

  • Maintaining and using Carpentry & Joinery hand tools
  • Preparing and safely operating portable power tools
  • Producing woodworking joints
  • Using appropriate information to set out timber products
  • Producing timber products to industry standards

You will also study:

  • Health and safety: The essential safety that is demanded by the construction industry
  • Communications: How the construction industry operates and communicates
  • Construction principles: How buildings are constructed and the role you would play as a Carpenter.
  • Full-time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3 or below, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

Applicants must have basic literacy and numeracy skills. These skills are essential for success in any trade, as they enable individuals to read and understand technical instructions, calculate measurements and quantities, follow safety procedures and regulations, communicate effectively with colleagues, customers, and supervisors, and solve problems and make decisions safely and efficiently.

The Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend college for four days a week, based at our Institute of Technology on our Boston Campus (Rochford).

The Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost Β£1500.

Learning takes place through a variety of theory and practical lessons. You will also need to carry out personal research to enable you to complete the course. Your skills and knowledge will be continuously assessed throughout the course; additionally, each unit will be assessed by end multiple choice examinations and practical tests.

Successful completion could lead to entry onto a relevant Level 2 course, applying for an apprenticeship or gaining employment in the Carpentry trade.

  • City & Guilds textbooks - Β£30
  • Mandatory PPE – Safety footwear and Cargo/work trousers
  • Boston College branded corporate workwear. We have a nominated supplier who can supply a β€˜workwear pack’ which consists of the mandatory workwear, 2 branded polo shirts and a sweatshirt for approx. Β£78+ VAT. Please speak to a member of staff for more details
