The level 1 Introductory Diploma is your starting block to developing the key skills required to pursue a career within any of the Public Services whilst increasing your English and Maths and work experience opportunities.

The course will provide you with the opportunity to explore in a practical way, the skills that are required for entry into the Uniformed Public Services. It will give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for them for employment. Career opportunities within the Police , Navy, Royal Marines, Security, Army, Royal Air Force, Fire Brigade, Mountain Rescue, Ambulance, Prison Services and Border Patrol can be closer than you realise.

From being upside down in a Kayak, Camping, rock climbing and learning military foot drill to studying security, law, Physical fitness and teamwork, our staff and qualification will get you there.

What will I do?

The Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Public Services will consider aspects of physical fitness and will investigate issues of personal health and well- being, help you develop problem solving skills and carrying out essential map reading and navigation. As part of your time on the course, you will investigate employment opportunities and develop an understanding of the role of the uniformed services.

You will develop a range of employability skills and techniques, understanding personal qualities and attitudes essential for success in working life. The course includes a variety of units which could include:

  • Being Organised
  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan
  • Working with Others
  • Researching a Topic
  • Finding Out about Public Services
  • Taking Part in Fitness Testing
  • Carrying out Security Searches
  • Responding to an Incident
  • Contributing to Your Community
  • Taking Part in Sport and Adventurous Activities

During the year you will take part in visits and activities which may include:

  • Army residential visit
  • Presentations at College by the RAF, Army, Navy, Police and Fire Service
  • Personal development activity with the Army
  • Police riot training
  • Residential visit at the Royal Navy base, Portsmouth

Other courses may be offered alongside the Diploma such as Award in Exercise Studies and Employability Skills.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grades 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

The Introductory Diploma in Public Services will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for three days a week.

The Introductory Diploma in Public Services is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

You will be assessed using a variety of different methods, which include observation, written assessments, discussions with tutor and workbooks.

Successful completion of the Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Public Services along with a good attendance record and positive reference from your tutor could lead to progression on to a Level 2 course, Apprenticeship, employment or to a career in the Armed Forces or other industries.

Learners may be subject to a yearly fee of up to £100 to cover the cost of any outdoor adventurous activities and residential trips.
