Functional Skills English can help you progress your career, take your next steps in education or develop your knowledge for further training and development.

The qualification is widely recognised by employers and most Universities as being an equivalent level to GCSEs. It can be a quicker route to achieving a Level 2 qualification than a GCSE with some learners achieving a Level 2 in 17 weeks as opposed to 32 weeks of GCSE English Language.

The Functional Skills English qualification is taught at three different levels: Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You will undertake an initial assessment to determine which level will be most suitable for you to start at.

What will I do?

You will have the opportunity to improve your:

  • Writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation and types of text
  • Reading skills: skimming, scanning and for detail
  • Speaking and listening/communication: discussions, presentations, following instructions

The course is delivered by experience tutors using a variety of interesting resources. Sessions are friendly and fun and allow you to work at your own pace.

Functional Skills English is a key qualification and is suitable for those learners who do not currently hold a GCSE in the subject or ESOL learners who have achieved ESOL Level 2 in reading and speaking and listening.

To study this course you will need to be able to cope with the regular commitment of a once a week class and capable of some independent study.

Functional Skills English – Block Week.

This course is also available as a block week that will take you 5 days to complete, over a 1 week period.

Starting Monday 17th June 2024, you will attend college at our Boston Campus (Rochford), between 9:15am and 4:15pm, Monday to Thursday, with your examinations taking place on the Friday.

You will also attend an assessment day prior to the course beginning, to evaluate the level that will best suit you.

The Functional Skills English course is free.

You will be assessed through externally set examinations for Reading and Writing, as well as two Speaking and Listening tasks that are marked internally.

The benefit of Functional Skills exams is that you will mostly receive your results within three weeks of taking an exam, and that re-sits are available on demand if you don’t pass first time.

Each part of the qualification is assessed separately, so once you have passed one part of the qualification, you don’t have to do that exam again even if you don’t pass the other exams straight away.

Certificates in English can help you to gain access to further training, in work and in your day-to-day lives as well as career progression and enhanced job opportunities.

Level 1 is equivalent to vocational GCSE grades 2 – 3 (Old GCSE grade E - D).
Level 2 is equivalent to vocational GCSE grades 4 - 5 (Old GCSE grade C).

There are no additional costs related to this course
