The Level 2 Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate is designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification in IT.

Using the industry standard hardware and software it will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to progress to further education and training in the Computing sector. The Level 2 Extended Certificate is broadly equivalent to four GCSEs.

What will I do?

The Level 2 Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate consists of a number of units covering the following topics:

  • The online world*
  • Technology systems*
  • A digital portfolio*
  • Installing and Making Computer Hardware (IMCH)
  • Computer networks
  • Software development
  • Multimedia Product Development
  • Mobile Apps Development

*These modules are deemed compulsory by the examining body Edexcel.

You will also cover Robotics Fundamentals as part of this course.

The year is divided into two semesters and you will be expected to complete at least four units each semester.

The course is delivered using a balance between practical and theory. E-learning, one-to-one support, individual learning plans, external visits, events and speakers are all included. We are one of the very few providers in the county to offer such a comprehensive programme.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

The entry qualifications for the Level 2 Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate are five GCSEs at grade 3 or above (Old GCSE grade D or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent).

The Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for at least 3 days a week, plus independent study.

The Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

The Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate is assessed predominantly through coursework. However, different lecturers may wish to introduce some exams or presentations to replicate experiences they will find on higher level courses or real life work. All units are internally assessed and graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Successful completion of the Level 2 Information and Creative Technology First Extended Certificate to a Merit or Distinction standard along with a good attendance record and positive reference from your tutor could lead to progression on to a Level 3 course. It could also lead to employment in Computing or an Apprenticeship.

Additional costs include purchasing pens, paper, course specific materials and pay for educational and non-educational visits.
