The Level 2 Art and Design Diploma is for those who are passionate about Art and Design.

The course will help you develop your practical skills in many areas Including: fine art, painting, sculpture, metalwork, print, plaster, photography, 3D designs, graphic design and 4D time-based media. You will be introduced to each area and process and be encouraged to experiment.

Your lecturers all have a working knowledge of the art and design industry and are all still active in the business outside of the college, resulting in accurate , up-to -ate knowledge being shared throughout the course.

What will I do?

You will study four different units covering the different art practices such as, fine art, painting, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, print, plaster, photography, 3D design and graphic design.

As an art and design student, you will have access to all of our art, design and media facilities, which include two art studios, ceramics and pottery studio (including kiln), photography studio and darkroom, two iMac editing suites, and a television studio. You will also be using industry standard software.

You will also take part in work experience with local employers to give you real world experienced that relates to the creative sector. You will be supported in identifying organisations for your placements, or you can generate these from your own contacts.

Regular visits are arranged to museums and galleries.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

The entry qualifications for the Level 2 Art and Design Diploma are five GCSEs at grade 1 or above (Old GCSE grade G and above) or equivalent and a portfolio of work will be required when you are invited in for a review..

If you do not have a portfolio of work to bring to the interview, you may be set a task to complete within 2 weeks as a condition to enrolment.

The Art and Design Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College three to four days a week, 9:00am-4:30pm, plus independent study.

The Art and Design Diploma is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

You will be assessed through practical tasks (70%), group work, work based evidence, coursework and presentations, which will be underpinned with theory (30%) to give you a broad grounding in art and design.

Successful completion of the course to a Merit or Distinction level would allow you to progress to the BTEC Level 3 Qualification in Art and Design, Graphic Design, Photography or Media (Film). You could also progress to other Level 3 courses delivered at Boston College.

These qualifications broaden your understanding of different aspects of the industry and create a perfect ‘stepping stone’ to university. Successful completion of a Level 3 course allows progression to a first choice university.

Should you decide to enter the world of employment this course is the equivalent of Four GCSE’s at grade A*-C.

Additional costs include some contribution towards educational visits and/or workshops approx. £30 per year. You will also be expected to provide your own art and design materials e.g. paints, sketchbooks, printing costs, etc. approx. £90 per year.
